Is the Part 107 test open book?
No. You can't bring notes, books or a cheat sheet into the Part 107 knowledge test. But you're not working from memory alone either: you get the FAA's official testing supplement to use during the exam.
What you can and can't use
Provided at the test
- The FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Supplement (charts and figures)
- Only other aids the FAA authorises. Check with the testing centre
Not allowed
- Your own notes or cheat sheets
- Books or study guides
- Help from anyone else
Breaking the rules is serious: under §107.69 someone caught cheating can be barred from applying for any FAA certificate or taking any FAA test for a year.
What the testing supplement gives you
The supplement is a booklet of sectional chart excerpts, figures and reference material. Chart and weather questions point you to a figure in it, for example "Refer to Figure 20". It gives you the picture, not the answer. You still need to know how to read a sectional chart and decode weather reports.
How to prepare for it
- Download the free testing supplement from the FAA and practise finding information in it quickly.
- Learn the key rules and numbers by heart. They're not in the supplement. Use our Part 107 cheat sheet to revise.
- Practise chart questions against the clock so looking things up doesn't eat your 2 hours.
- Sit a full 60-question mock exam to test your pacing.
